J. Warren Upson Memorial Volunteer of the Year

LARRY SMOTROFF joined the Flanders Board in June of 2018 and serves as Vice President. He brings over 40 years of experience from higher education and nonprofit organizations.  Larry earned a B.A. from Rutgers University and a Master’s and Doctorate from the UCONN. A resident of Woodbury since 2004 with his wife and son, Larry enjoys gardening, woodcarving, reading, and singing in the B’nai Israel Synagogue choir. He established and chairs the Grants Committee, served on the Succession Planning Team, the Sustainability and Strategic Planning Committees, and has brought researchers to Flanders.  Larry has given countless volunteer hours over the past 7 years, leading efforts to secure grant funds to install an ADA-compliant trail on the Van Vleck Sanctuary, to carve beautiful wood trail signs, to build bluebird boxes and wooden benches. He and his wife have grown and potted hundreds of succulents and cacti for the Artisan Market. His passion for environmental education and non-profit business sustainability have materially contributed to our success to date.
